The creamery at Botton Village – a thriving social and working community for adults with special needs based in Danby Dale in the heart of the National Park, is a local success story.
The Creamery is run by artisan cheese-maker Alastair Pearson and produces fantastic unpasteurised raw milk cheeses (including Dale End Cheddar, Summerfield, a Swiss mountain cheese, the tangy complex Moorland Tomme, and Yorkshire Gouda) and the most amazing real yoghurt and butter, not to mention homegrown organic meat and vegetables, organic juices, jams, organic bread and biscuits elsewhere in the village.
If you can't get to Botton, there are local stockists of their wonderful products, including Hunters of Helmsley (cheese), the Health Food Shop in Danby (yoghurt) and The Dispensary in Whitby (just about everything) as well as appearing on the menu at The Star Inn at Harome.
Tucked away in a purpose built dairy on The Ropery below Whitby Abbey, make sure you seek out The Whitby Cheese Co. Elizabeth Snowden's cheese is made using milk from a local Jersey herd. Food reviewers, SquidBeak have checked out the exquisite flavours which include Endeavour, sweet and milky, and Whitby Jet, a rich cheddar. Botham's of Whitby, Sandsend Stores, Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Hunters of Helmsley are also stockists.
