Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum

The Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is situated in the village of Skinningrove, a five minute walk from the coast. The museum is unique as it is based within original mine buildings and the visitor is given a guided tour of the site which concludes with a demonstration of ironstone mining of the Victorian period.

The rich industrial heritage of iron stone working and the social history which supported it within the region, including the North York Moors, is celebrated in the museum.

The museum also provides walks and events which celebrates not only the industrial but also the social and natural heritage of the region, including the North York Moors. More information on events can be found on their website.

Accessibility

Disabled parking: immediately outside entrance at the rear of the building providing a level access in to the museum.

Two wheelchairs are available at the museum for use by visitors free of charge.

Outside surface: tarmac, gradient, 20 steps from main car park to museum entrance, handrail provided. Slope 8 metres into north drift entrance of mine.

Internal access is on the flat. Area of ramp access at junction due to changes in floor height. Wheelchair access suitable. Guides trained to assist with mobility issues.

Mine workings are cool 10c, fleece or warm clothing advisable.

Toilet facilities available on site.
