Danby

The bustling moorland village of Danby lies in the Esk Valley, below the warm, south-facing slopes of Danby Low Moor. Come by train for a day out on the Esk Valley Railway, and visit The Moors National Park Centre where events, activities, walks, and picnics on the lawns await.

Things to see and do

Experience the magic of the North York Moors at The Moors National Park Centre, half a mile east of Danby. The former hunting lodge is set in an idyllic spot on the banks of the River Esk, and is accessible on foot from Danby train station. Admission is free!

Danby was one the home of writer and cleric Canon Atkinson, vicar of Danby church, which lies in a remote and stunning location up the dale.

Nearby trips

High up Danby Dale is Botton Village, one of several communities owned and run by the Camphill Village Trust, which assists adults with a learning disability. Visitors are welcome to visit the craft workshops, bakery, creamery, coffee shop, bookshop and gift shop.

Walks and views

It's great walking country around Danby. There are five circular walks in the booklet 'Walks around The Moors Centre', available from local shops and at The Moors National Park Centre.

Don't miss the easy country walk to Danby Castle – now a working farm, but dating from the early 14th century – and to Duck Bridge, a medieval packhorse bridge over the River Esk. You can download a route guide here.

At 981ft (299m), Danby Beacon is also a superb viewpoint in good weather.

Eating and drinking

Danby has a pub and a bakery-café, and there's also a café at The Moors National Park Centre, which is open when the Centre is open. The nearby village of Ainthorpe boasts the oldest pub in the area, the Fox and Hounds, which dates back to 1555.
