Ian Burke is a painter and printmaker who was born in Saltburn, and studied at Newcastle upon Tyne University and Goldsmith’s, University of London. He is also a teacher first and foremost, and is currently Drawing Master at Eton College.
Ian’s artwork is based on the coastline from the River Tees to the River Esk and the hinterland of the North York Moors. He still enjoys the pursuits of his boyhood and likes to think that his own personal interests form the basis of his work.
Ian says:
I am fortunate enough to have a large Columbian printing press at home, and an obsolete pig shed which serves as my studio. I have a river and a waterfall near the garden of my house, which is set in the middle of the moors. I realise that I am very fortunate and I have no desire to look elsewhere for inspiration. I do not crave contemporary approval but I very much enjoy the fact that some people like what I do.
