Love and Adornment
Love and Adornment
Saturday 14 February – Monday 16 March Vienna Forrester, Rae Fineron and Rachel Lucie Johns bring us a beautiful selection of contemporary jewellery, inspired by nature, literature, culture and emotion.
Rachel Lucie Johns
Rachel Lucie Johns is a contemporary jewellery designer-maker, who is passionate about semi-precious stones, unusual jewellery and the natural world. Under the name ‘Rachel Lucie Designs’, she works from her studio in Hebden Bridge, in the South Pennines.
As someone who always loved jewellery and sparkling treasures of any kind, Rachel discovered a passion for designing and creating her own designs in 2008, during a career break to bring up her two young children. Rachel never looked back, establishing her own online jewellery brand and regularly stocking galleries and exhibitions ever since.
Rachel spent happy hours as a child lost in a world of beads and wonder, playing with her grandma’s Indian silver-and-sandalwood scented box, which was filled with antique jewellery, Edwardian oddments, semi-precious beads and Art Deco necklaces. The romance of those bygone days has always stayed with her and still inspires her work today.
Rachel constantly looks for ways to combine her strong passion for nature and adornment with her undeniable magpie tendencies, creating gorgeous jewellery that is both wearable and to be treasured. Her work is often vintage-inspired and full of jewel colours and eclectic charm, using semi-precious stones and pearls.
Formally trained as a heraldic artist, Vienna Forrester has been developing her unique digital fractal art techniques since 2004.
She is inspired by patterns in the natural world, and is particularly drawn to the coast and to wild, unspoiled countryside, which she regards as “ever changing and with a myriad of moods and colours”.
Vienna uses details from her digital photographs to create base fractals, which she then further manipulates to relate to specific times and places, whether Orkney and Shetland or the North York Moors. What results is a fusion of two distinctly different fields – the absolute rules of the fractal algorithm and the imagination of the artist.
She also applies the same process to smaller images to create fractal art jewellery, with each piece individually named and exclusive to the wearer. All are set under glass and include precious and base metal leafs such as gold, palladium, copper, aluminium and platinum – portable art works in their own right.
In 2014, Vienna presented a solo exhibition at the Ionian Centre for Arts and Culture’s prestigious International Arts Festival in Kefalonia, Greece. The exhibition and residency was supported by Arts Council England and the National Lottery.
York-born jeweller Rae Fineron has been creating handmade silver jewellery in North Yorkshire since 2006, having first trained at Manukau College in Auckland, New Zealand.
Working under the name ‘Rae Fin Jewellery’, Rae looks to the simplicity and beauty of the natural landscape for her inspiration. She acquired a knowledge of working with jet in the artistic coastal village of Staithes (where she had a studio), while the magic of the surrounding moors and coast led her to create her ‘Natura’ collection.
A fossil or a pebble found on the beach, the pattern of the sky or the first drops of rain – all become the inspiration for Rae’s jewellery designs. She enhances silver’s natural beauty with shape, form and texture, adding colour with jet, gemstones or accents of gold and copper.
Her jewellery has an individual, organic feel and Rae is proud to continue this ancient craft in a traditional way.
