The Esk and Coastal Streams Catchment Partnership encompasses a dynamic range of projects dedicated to the protection and improvement of the River Esk and its surrounding landscape, as well as a number of coastal streams.
From working with farmers to improve water quality, to creating and restoring habitat – the partnership seeks to deliver a variety of environmental, social and economic benefits.
Defra first appointed the National Park Authority as host of this scheme in 2014 and is one of over 100 similar initiatives across the country. Each one is part of Defra’s ‘Catchment Based Approach’, which works in partnership with Government, Local Authorities, Water Companies, businesses and more, to maximise the natural value of our environment.
- Water quality and environment: Working alongside our partners to improve the aquatic habitat and water quality of the catchment. To support the rare and threatened species of the river and wider landscape.
- Water level management: Harness natural flood processes to create a more naturally functioning river, reduce flood risk and preserve water.
- Reconnecting people: Improve understanding of the river landscape by telling the story of its evolution. Encourage people to protect their heritage through volunteering.
- Working together: Ensure good partnership collaboration, governance and develop a robust evidence base for project delivery.
“Our vision is to create a healthy, resilient and wildlife rich environment within the Esk & Coastal Streams Catchment, that will bring both social and economic benefits to all.”
