Littlebeck Wood

£3835.61 was awarded to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust through our Traditional Boundary Fund to restore of a boundary hedge at Littlebeck Wood nature reserve.

The aim was to retain traditionally managed hedgerows in the landscape in order to conserve the connectivity and biodiversity which they support, the landscape character and also the skills required to carry out this work.

210m of boundary hedge at the nature reserve was restored after becoming overgrown, by hedgelaying and reinstating the stock fencing either side to protect new growth from browsing.

Before

The hedge was overgrown, but was a good age and size for laying, with lots of good stems and no significant gaps.

After

Fence reinstated both sides, and in-hedge trees retained. New growth on pleachers (right) observed in mid-March 2022.
