Building conservation

There are many historic buildings in the National Park which are of great value to both the landscape and cultural heritage. It is important that they are kept in good repair.
Around 3,000 buildings are ‘listed’ for their special architectural or historic interest and consent is needed for most alterations.
There are also 42 Conservation Areas in the National Park. These have been designated because they are of historic or architectural importance.
Free advice on repairs and maintenance of traditional buildings is provided by the National Park Authority.
Historic Building Grants are available for repairs to Listed Buildings on the Authority’s Register of Listed Buildings at Risk. Exceptional Listed Buildings may also qualify for English Heritage Grant Aid.
Conservation Area Enhancement Grants are also available for re-instating lost architectural features such as windows and doors and traditional roofing materials on historic buildings in Conservation Areas.
