Four legs good

Squidbeak logoThose of you with canine chums will be glad to know that the Yorkshire coast is dog-friendly (apart from one section of the beach at Whitby and Saltburn during summer months) and there are tons of places you can have a pint or lunch with your pooch in tow. Me and my Parson’s Terrier Archie have put this list together...

First call is invariably Runswick Bay, where the golden crescent of sand stretches endlessly, and after I’ve run his legs off it’s time for a cuppa and a slice of homemade cake at the Sandside Café at the top of the slip. There’s a bowl of water for Archie too. If it’s a pint and sarnie I’m after Runswick Bay Hotel at the top of the bank is a good place to sit – inside or out – their lovely Lab Ted will greet you, and give you his best ‘give me crisps’ eyes.

Whitby’s a very dog-friendly town – and if you really love Fido, The Fuzzy Dog on Flowergate is a must. I can’t be the only one to walk in there thinking it’s a cake shop. I got to the counter before I realised this is a shop full of baked ‘gourmet’ treats for dogs. Doh! Beckett’s Coffee Shop (just a trot up Skinner Street) is a good spot for lunch; their homemade soup is excellent, and Archie always gets a treat from Julie, the super-friendly owner.

I can’t point you to good food in Skinningrove (apart from a decent chippy in a shed) but the beach (Catterstey Sands) is an absolute must. If you’ve never been, go. It will knock your socks off. It’s Archie’s favourite walk, and he’s the boss.
