Jonathan Middlemiss’ paintings, ceramics and other objects reflect the spirit and wild landscapes of the Yorkshire uplands and high moors.
Jonathan Middlemiss
Jonathan Middlemiss is inspired by experiences of immersion in the landscape – where the wild lands speak in a way he understood as a child in the Yorkshire Dales and, later, the North York Moors.
Re-tracing his father’s droving routes to take sheep to market; listening to the sounds of the wooded ghylls and waterfalls; walking the upland peat bogs and watching the wildlife of these now precious habitats – all become starting points for new paintings.
In such places, Jonathan senses portals to a spiritual reality that we have become alienated from and often dismiss as irrational. Here, says Jonathan, are opportunities to appreciate our experience of the world as magical.
