Heard of mindfulness, but unsure what it is?

Broadly-speaking, it’s about having awareness of ourselves and the world around us in the present moment. So often our mind is caught up worrying – or chewing over things that can create stress, anxiety and can even affect our physical health.

Paying attention to the small things - such as sensing the air around you, feeling the ground beneath your feet, or noticing your breath as you move, can interrupt the ‘autopilot’, give a fresh perspective on life and slow our usual thought patterns. You can be mindful during activity and at rest, and it’s even more effective if done outdoors, as nature has an additional calming effect on the brain.

September is often seen as a month to take stock and start anew, a second new year if you like, so this is a good excuse to breathe and reboot as we welcome in the autumn.

Celebrate Mindful Month with us and feel invigorated in nature with a number of events and activities that will rejuvenate your spirits. Here are some activities to get you started.

Tuesday 3, 10 and 24 September: Yoga by the sea  

Join Happy Seal Yoga at Whitby beach on Tuesday evenings. Bring your yoga mat and enjoy an hour of listening to the waves lapping against the shore. Check their Facebook page to confirm each session.  Yoga by the sea (c) Chris Lazenby

Thursday 5, 12, 19 and 26 September: Yoga with Nadja Schutt

Relaxing and uplifting yoga classes for all levels of experience at Helmsley Arts Centre. Enjoy gentle movement, breathing and peace, going home feeling energised, centred, happy and refreshed.

Sunday 8 September: Mindfulness in nature

Re-connect with nature on a 3 mile mindful walk around Ravenscar. Calm your mind, stretch your legs and drink in the scenery.

Wednesday 11 September: Relax and meditate

Buddhist nun Ani Tselha takes you along quiet, shady woodland paths in Raincliffe Woods and a hay meadow that lend themselves perfectly to her peaceful meditations and mindful observations.

Friday 13 September and Sunday 22 September: Mindfulness amble and Lino printing

Join Gumboots & Wellingtons Rustic Retreat and Hannah Turlington, Lino Printer & Designer for a mindfulness amble with an arty twist. Take in the surroundings of Ellerburn and Dalby Forest followed by tea and cake. Once in the studio use the nature finds and photos to create a small lino block and print a set of 3 cards to take home.

Sunday 15 September: A mindful woodland wander

Reconnect with nature among the trees of Hayburn Wyke on a 2 mile wander. Trees have been proven to calm busy minds and make us grounded. There'll be stops along the way to do a short mindfulness exercise and a meditation.

Tuesday 17 September: Forest Bathing

Become more mindful in nature with Faith Douglas, the founder of Forest Bathing UK. Spend the day at High Dalby House, a retreat in the depths of Dalby Forest. Essential tree oils are proven to have a positive effect on the body as well as an improved awareness in nature.

Friday 20 September- Sunday 22 September: Yoga and Ayurveda weekend retreat

Welcome the September equinox with seasonal yoga and mindful meditation, Ayurvedic cooking workshop, Yoga Nidra (relaxation) and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

Sunday 29 September: Yoga on the lawn at Ellerburn

Engage your senses in the peaceful and untouched valley of Ellerburn. The class will be gently energising and restful, leaving you with a heightened appreciation for nature, feeling inner and outer calm.
