Financial assistance for gates and stiles on Rights of Way

Financial Assistance for Gates and Stiles on Rights of Way

The National Park Authority remains committed to helping landowners, tenants and occupiers to manage Rights of Way across their land. Legislation states that gates and stiles are the landowners’ responsibility to maintain.

However, where they are on a Right of Way which is promoted by this Authority, materials to repair/replace them can sometimes be provided free of charge. If the Right of Way is not a promoted route, the landowner can still claim 25% of the reasonable cost of materials plus installation from the Authority - but only if the work adheres to the British Standard BS5709 (2006). Please contact the Senior Ranger for your area of the National Park for further advice.

To see if any of the Rights of Way on your land are promoted by this Authority, check our on-line Rights of Way map.

How to apply for financial aid

After an initial meeting with the Senior Ranger and once the furniture type, location, design specification, materials required and certain conditions have all been agreed, complete this form and return it to this Authority.

It will then be processed accordingly and if monies are due, they will be paid after the work has been completed and certified by the Senior Ranger.
