Sailing and windsurfing

Whether you’re an experienced sailor or complete novice, nothing beats leaving the stresses of everyday life behind and heading out to sea on a dinghy. Spectacular scenery and the chance to get up close to marine life is not to be missed.

For exciting off-shore sailing, Runswick Bay Beach and Sailing Club is the place to go, with dinghies of all classes, great facilities, an annual regatta and races most weeks in the season.

Whitby's sailing heritage is celebrated at August's annual three day Whitby Regatta. For the rest of the year Whitby Yacht Club has excellent facilities and unsurpassed harbour and sea views. The Club welcomes new cruising members, both sail and power.

Scaling Dam Sailing Club, between Whitby and Guisborough, is a RYA recognised training centre. Every spring they organise a fun Open Day where all the family can enjoy a sail with one of their experienced crew. They also welcome anyone to join in any club events or just visit to enjoy sailing in this superb location. It's also a great place to go windsurfing with good winds and ample grassed areas for rigging.

The sailing club has a range of adapted dinghies for anyone wanting to experience the thrill of open water too, with taster sessions between April and September for those looking to have a go.
