There are lots of exciting cycling and mountain bike events in the North York Moors area for all ages, whether you're a seasoned cyclist, a beginner looking to improve your skills or simply looking for a great family day out. The North York Moors has a range of gravel, road, adventure, triathlon and mountain bike events to cover all bases. Pre-booking essential:

Mountain biking, cyclocross, gravel biking and enduro events 2024

16 February - Introduction to Night time bike riding.
Location: Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Have you ever wanted to experience what it’s like riding at night time? As part of our Dark Skies Festival, we are offering introductory sessions in partnership with Sutton Bank Bikes. You will be taken out on a guided bike ride along the green route (3 miles) at Sutton Bank National Park Centre. This is for people experienced in riding bikes on off-road terrain but who are keen to see how different riding at night can be.  Book online: Dark Skies Festival

2024 Mini Shredders and Rippers Time Trial 
9 March, 13 April, 11 May, 15 June, 13 July, 21 September, 26 October, 23 November.  
Location: Sutton Bank National Park Centre. Mini Shredders takes place on the skills loop (morning) and Rippers takes place on the gravel loop (afternoon) with sections of "off-piste." Closures and diversions to the trails while events taking place. Pre-booking essential at Sutton Bank Bikes.

5 May  - Dalby Forest Duathlon and Dalby Devil Gravel Ride.
Location: Dalby Forest. An off-road Duathlon includes a sprint distance ideal for beginners (approx 5k, 20k2.5k) or a standard (approx 10k, 40k, 5 k), which can also be done as a relay. The gravel rides will be around 50km or 100km on Dalby best gravel roads, suitable for gravel, cyclocross, mountain and hybrid bikes. Organiser and online booking: Wild Deer Events.

18-19 May  - Boltby Bash
Location: Boltby near Thirsk - five stage enduro mountain bike race on wild and natural trails on private land, everything from flowing loam and technical rock gardens. Enjoys some fine panoramic views across the North York Moors National Park. Entries open November 2023. Online booking: SiEntries

26 May -  Yorkshire Mountain Bike Marathon
Location: Birdsall Estates. The Yorkshire Mountain Bike Marathon is a traditional challenge mountain bike event that takes place around the private, normally un-accessible 12,000-acre Birdsall Estate. The event is inclusive and suitable for a variety of abilities, some will look to get a fast time and others will look to complete the challenge in their own time. However everyone will get to experience the natural single-track, woodland and unique terrain.

8-9 June - Ard Moors
Location: Lord Stones Country Park -  a multi-stage enduro mountain bike race, an Ard adventure on the stunning North York Moors. Expect steep natural trails, single track, big hills, long climbs and entertainment at the stunning Lord Stones Country Park in the heart of the National Park.

13-14 July - Kinesis UK Yorkshire Coast Dirt Dash
Location: YHA Whitby. Non-timed, self-supported reliability bike packing event with overnight camping. Two days of riding on the Route YC Adventure Weekender Route, taking in the dramatic scenery of the Yorkshire Coast and North York Moors National Park.

12-14 July - Gravel Rocks
Location: Duncombe Park, Helmsley.  A different kind of gravel event, two days with two stages. Two night timed segments (over 10km loop) and four day timed segments (over 75km loop). Created by the team from the Dirty Reiver.

22 – 25 August - The Crossing (Rat Race) 
Sample some of the UK’s finest mountain biking on this coast-to-coast 320km (200 mile) mountain bike ride on fully signed tracks, taking in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks.

Road and sportive cycling events 2024

16 March - Daffodils Sportive
Location: Thirsk and across the North York Moors to see Farndale's famous daffodils, with a choice of three routes 137km, 120km or 55km. (34,72 or 83 miles)

13 April - Ronde Yorkshire Sportive
Location: head off from Stokesley along one of three routes 173km, 142km or 78km. (107, 88 or miles), with the medium and long taking in the iconic assent of Chimney Bank.

26 - 29 April and 30 August - 1st September - Guided Cycling holiday for woman on the Yorkshire Coast
Location: Robin Hood's Bay
Three day cycling adventure for women on the stunning Yorkshire Coast. Including guided rides, maintenance sessions, stunning landscapes and dips in the sea!

16 June - Struggle Moors
Location:  Duncombe Park, Helmsley.
Struggle Moors is one of the UK's hardest sportives, set in the breathtaking North York Moors landscape. Struggle Moors boasts bucket-list cycling climbs woven into the best North York Moors scenery. Pre-register now.

22 June - Coast to Coast in a Day
Location: 241kms (150 miles) from Seascale to Whitby via Great Broughton, Kildale, Esk Valley. This annual event is very popular and you are advised to book as early as possible.

29 June - Yorkshire Beast
Location: Thirsk. The ultimate challenge, tackling both the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors over 327kms (200 miles) and with over 5,500m of climbing, taking in some of our greatest climbs including Boltby Bank, Caper Hill and Rosedale Chimney Bank.

29 - 30 June - Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge
Location: Malton. Cycle 144miles (230kms) over 2 days around the Yorkshire Wolds, supporting the local charity of Ryedale Special Families. Following the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle route devised by Sustrans.

September (date tbc) - Yorkshire Corker
Location: Starting at York St John University Sports Park, this charity ride has three routes, the longest heading into the North York Moors. Take your pick from The Stein 151km, The Full Pint 96km or The Half Pint 45km. (94, 60, or 28 miles)

October (date tbc) - The Tanfield Tour of Yorkshire Event
Location: Great Broughton. A chance to ride with our local pro cyclists, Harry and Charlie Tanfield, raising funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Yorkshire Cancer Research, on three routes 47km, 115km or 146km (30, 71 or 90 miles) across the North York Moors.

A complete list of British Cycling affiliated events is also available. Local cycling clubs also hold organised club rides, with routes that will often take in the beautiful North York Moors.


Triathlons 2024

18 August - Helmsley Triathlon
Location: Helmsley open air pool. Option of a swimrun or triathlon all starting from the pool in Helmsley. Cycle ride uses the quiet lanes of the "Bransdale Loop" and a multi-terrain 10km running route near to the town.


Major cycling events 2024

14 April - East Cleveland Classic 
Location: Saltburn. Challenging elite level road race as part of the National Championship Road Race hosted by Redcar and Cleveland, with a men's and women's race. Starting and finishing  in Saltburn taking in Skelton, Guisborough, Carltons, Boosbeck, Lingdale and Brotton.

19-21 July -  National cross-country Championships
Location: Dalby Forest, Pickering. National cross county championships more details tbc.
