Visitor Experience Grant: Horsebox café brings local flavours to Scaling glamping spot

Thanks to support from the North York Moors National Park Authority’s Visitor experience grant, Clover Hill Farm Glamping and Cottages has given new life to a vintage horse trailer, repurposing it to serve hot drinks, local produce and camping essentials to their guests and passers-by.

Guests and walkers of the nearby rights of ways can enjoy delicious cakes from Danby Bakery, jars of Eskdale Honey and free range eggs laid just 300 yards away! There are even local walk guides available to help visitors explore the surrounding landscape.

The trailer isn’t just about tasty local treats – it’s also about connecting people with nature. Visitors can pick up a nature scavenger hunt, using the on-site information board to help them spot different textures, colours and sounds of the areas. It’s a fun and interactive way to discover the diverse wildlife that calls this area home.

This project showcases how local businesses can support each other, keeping money within the local economy, whilst also providing a unique and memorable experience.

What is the Visitor experience grant?

As a result of the continued working of polyhalite and salt over a 25-year period from 2023 at Boulby Mine, a s106 agreement has been secured to provide compensation and mitigation against any negative impacts on the tourism economy within Staithes and surrounding area (pdf). Out of this contribution, a fund has been established to support local tourism businesses to develop new products and services that showcase the North York Moors and its special qualities.

This Fund is designed to support new activity by businesses and organisations that promote the North York Moors. We encourage local businesses to apply for funds to aid diversification, particularly activity that extends the season, provides a high quality visitor experience, encourages off-peak visits, supports the net zero carbon agenda and embodies regenerative tourism principles.

This projects supports the following Management Plan objective:
