Local meat and freshly caught fish
For fresh fish off the boat, you can't beat the Yorkshire Coast. Bring home the catch from a fish stall at Saltburn Farmers’ Market, or from Whitby Seafish in Staithes, or Thundercliffes, a champion fish filleter (available for delivery from Scarborough to Helmsley and surrounding areas, plus a regular at the monthly Hovingham Village Market). If it's wet fish or fresh, cooked or smoked shellfish you're after head to The Magpie's Whitby Catch across the road from Whitby's fish market.
Seek out Fortune's Smokehouse for the best traditional smoked kippers in England too. Found at the end of a narrow cobbled street in Whitby's old town, it's been smoking since 1872. You'll smell it before you see it, as the sweet aroma of oak and beach wood smoke fills the air.
The many small farms dotted across the North York Moors make for a superb selection of meat while England's largest expanse of heather is divided into grouse moors and pheasant/partridge shoots providing ample game after the Glorious Twelfth. Call in at Low Bell End Farm in Rosedale Abbey to pick up some of their delicious lamb, game sausages and pies.
Buy direct from the farm, farmers' markets, farm shops and visit the traditional butchers shops to see the range of excellent quality fresh meat, game and homemade pies. In season, game features heavily on many of the area's pub and restaurant menus.
