Cycle the coast
If the idea of bowling along the coast on a bicycle with the wind in your hair sounds like a grand day out, then take our tip and hire a bike from Trailways of Hawsker and head along the traffic-free Cinder Track to Robin Hood’s Bay.
The former Hawsker railway station has bikes for every size and age including baby seats, buggies, tag-alongs, tandems and wait for it: electric bikes. If you’ve never tried one, they take all the pain out of cycling and leave you with just the fun.
The station is right by the Cinder Track – once a railway line that cut a route for 18 glorious miles from Whitby to Scarborough. On a sunny day it’s hard to beat, spinning along Famous Five style, following the coastline oohing and aahing at the vivid palette of yellow gorse, bright green fields and a shimmering blue sea.
You could put together a picnic from Radford’s of Sleights, which is much more than a butcher’s or grab a pie from nearby Jackson’s at Ruswarp. The hillside at Bay Ness (you’ll see the National Trust sign) is a great picnic spot or save it for the stunning stretch of sandy beach at Robin Hood’s Bay.
There’s no shortage of refuelling stops in Bay. We’ve told you about the cool Tea, Toast and Post in the old post office and Swell in a former chapel with a terrific sea view terrace. Or take your pick from three in a row: the Coffee Shack, Bay Belles and Elle Estelle’s and keep an eye on the Old Bakery having a major makeover.
If you haven’t gone electric, it’s a long pull up to Ravenscar on the cliff top, but the rewards are panoramic views and afternoon tea at the Raven Hall Hotel.
Dedicated cyclists go on to Scarborough but we retrace our steps back to the old railway station at Hawsker, where if it takes your fancy you can stay in a three bedroom, two bathroom former railway carriage. Your own real life train set.
