Grosmont

Grosmont (pronounced 'Growmont') was once a hive of industry but is now a peaceful village huddled in the Esk Valley. The village owes its size to the discovery of ironstone in 1836, when George Stephenson's original railway from Whitby to Pickering was being built. Although the ironstone industry is long gone, the railway still dominates the village. As well as heritage services on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, there's an adjoining platform for the Esk Valley Railway which runs from Middlesbrough to Whitby, making Grosmont easily accessible by train.

Things to see and do

Take a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It has its northern terminus at Grosmont, and you can also visit the engine sheds and see the world's oldest passenger railway tunnel, built by railway pioneer George Stephenson.

There are also regular services on the Esk Valley Railway, to and from Whitby.

There's heritage of a different kind in the form of Grosmont Co-operative Society. Established in 1867, during the industrial boom, it's the UK's oldest independent co-op society.

Walks

The 3.5-mile Rail Trail runs up Stephenson's original railway line from Grosmont, via Beck Hole, to Goathland. Buy the guide from local shops.

There are several cafés and a pub in Grosmont, including a tearoom at the heritage railway station.
