On a quiet lane with panoramic views across Rosedale, The Tree Relaxation Retreat’s location perfectly embodies ‘retreat’, and as soon as you walk through the door, you’ll find it hard not to relax.

Join one of the yoga, meditation and mindfulness weekends or midweek, you can simply stay on a bed and breakfast basis and book one of the treatments such as a relaxing massage. There’s even a five-day silent retreat where you can allow yourself precious time to simply BE without the distraction of technology and chatter.

Alison Goodwin, a yoga teacher and former Zen Buddhist behind Adventures for the Soul, offers experiences that are all about using nature to help soothe the soul and hit the pause button on normal life.

Whether it’s mindfulness walks through scenic woodland or along dramatic coastline, yoga classes combined with a spot of stargazing, be prepared to feel calmer and more accepting of life after one of Alison’s sessions.

Lorraine Clissold is a yoga teacher and author of the Chinese cookery book entitled: “Why the Chinese don’t count calories”. Together with partner Mark, she runs a mini retreat centre, catering for up to eight guests at a time, staying in a log cabin set in four acres of private woodland at Valley View on the edge of the National Park and just a stone’s throw from the coast at Whitby.  

All the rooms have little extras including meditation seats, salt lamps and essential oil diffusers to help guests’ mindfulness. Short breaks include women’s wellness retreats, yoga and walking weekends or a seasonal yoga and food experience where exercises and meals are designed to make the most of the seasons and the changing energy of nature.
