Barn Owl

Species information

Habitat

Barn Owls live in open landscapes like farmlands, grasslands, and the edges of woodlands. They prefer areas with abundant small mammals for hunting and nest in old buildings or tree cavities.

Appearance

Distinctive in appearance with a heart-shaped face, pale white or cream-coloured feathers, and a slightly golden-brown back. They have large, dark eyes and long, slender wings. Their undersides are typically white or light gray, and they have a quiet, graceful flight.

Lifestyle

Barn Owls are nocturnal hunters, primarily active at night. They hunt by flying low over open areas, using their excellent hearing to detect small mammals, like mice and voles. They often nest in quiet, undisturbed locations like barns or tree cavities. Barn Owls are solitary and territorial, with a strong bond between mates during the breeding season. They don’t build nests but lay eggs in existing cavities or sheltered spots.
