The legendary fish & chips restaurant
Prepare to queue at the iconic Magpie Café in Whitby.
Since 1971 Ian Robson has been serving up award-winning fish & chips from the handsome, 18th century former Merchant’s house on the harbourside. ‘You can look out of the window and see where your supper’s come from’ says Ian. ‘The fish comes from boat to table – you can’t get any fresher than that.’
It’s a very comfortable, smart restaurant, and service is famously friendly. While fish & chips is their most popular dish, choose from a comprehensive menu that includes fish pie, salmon and haddock gratin and lobster thermidor. ‘Catch of the day’ is chalked up on a board too.
Chef Paul Gilroy does marvellous things with scallops, and knows his way round Whitby crab too. It’s not an accident that some of the country’s most influential restaurant reviewers have blazed a trail here.
There’s a takeout next to the restaurant – but watch your chips, Whitby seagulls are shameless thieves!
