The Whitby Deli

The deli and kitchen

If you’re on the hunt for the very best of Yorkshire produce, and fancy a spot of lunch at the same time, look no further. This modern, bright deli/café at the top of Flowergate has floor to ceiling shelves groaning with award-winning own-label chutneys, jams and preserves alongside sweets, savoury treats and artisan chocolates. The deli offers a fantastic range of vegetarian and gluten free produce including pâté, cakes and pasta.

In a previous life, owner Catherine Cook was a city slicker, working in London at the Barristers’ Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn. Originally from Hartlepool, she came back north ‘for love!’ and settled in Whitby. ‘For years I’ve dreamed of running a deli’ she says ‘food has been my passion for as long as I can remember. When the building became available, I knew it was the right time to make my move.’

Whether you’re picking up the essentials or want to spend an afternoon enjoying some light bites over a glass of wine, head for this modern, light and airy deli-cum-restaurant. On Saturday evenings stone baked pizzas and big bowls of pasta are served up, perfect for a jolly night out with family and friends.

On the blackboard, choose from the All Day Brunch, which includes homemade granola and fruit compote, an ‘epic’ sausage sandwich and a Harrogate bacon roll, then move on to a grazing board – perhaps the Mighty Meat Platter with charcuterie from the counter or the fabulous Ploughman’s (Richard III Wensleydale, pork pie and a scotch egg with balsamic onions and bread). Elsewhere, there’s wholesome homemade soup and fab toasties – The Classic is just that, cheese and ham, served on a tin plate with real ale chutney – perfect after a bracing trot on the beach.Interior shot of the seating area by Ceri Oakes

Stock up on store cupboard staples, including peppers, capers and olives – the stylish, colourful packaging is irresistible. Take home local cheese too for your supper, not forgetting a jar of homemade chutney – the spicy gooseberry and coriander really is a winner. ‘I really wanted to create a special, contemporary, laid-back place’ says Catherine ‘and I’ve got a fabulous core bunch of locals along with happy visitors who seem to appreciate some of the best of Yorkshire produce.’
