The project
Sutton Bank is famed for its sweeping views but it is also rich in hidden stories. Thanks to funding from the National Grid's Landscape Enhancement Initiative, Raiding the Bank explores a wealth of history, from the Iron Age hillfort at Roulston Scar to the bloody Battle of Byland in 1322, and the Second World War defences built to protect the area.

Through archaeological excavation, geophysical surveys and archival research we investigated these fascinating moments in time, while offering opportunities for the public to get involved. Volunteers and members of the community played a key role in the discoveries, with events, walks and hand-on activities.
Coming later in 2026 is a new walking trail from Sutton Bank National Park Centre, which will invite you to explore the sights and stories of the area's remarkable history. This trail will be accompanied by a new webpage which links to trail content, including videos, articles and more.
