A clear path to a warm welcome

Tucked away in the edge of Goathland, Homestead Kitchen has recently used the North York Moors National Park’s Accessibility grant to make a practical change that will benefit a wide range of visitors.

An accessibility audit highlighted that, while the indoor areas were suitable for those with mobility needs, the approach to the restaurant entrance was difficult to navigate. The existing brick path from the car park ended short of the front door, leaving visitors to cross an area of loose gravel. This created challenges for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility and anyone using a pushchair.
With support from the Accessibility Grant, The Homestead extended the brick path to reach the entrance. This small but effective improvement now provides a stable, even surface from the car park right to the door.
The outcome is a safer, more accessible arrival point and a better experience for visitors who previously struggled with the pebble surface. It also supports wider wellbeing by reducing trip hazards and making access more predictable and comfortable.

The project shows how small adjustments, supported through the Accessibility Grant, can make a meaningful difference for both businesses and the people they welcome.

This projects supports the following Management Plan objective:
