Discover teashops in tranquil villages, local produce from working farms and walled gardens, afternoon tea overlooking the coast or at historic abbeys, hotels, delis, cafés and bakeries - all put cake on the centre stage in the North York Moors.

Cake adventures with David Atherton , from the Great British Bake Off
Local lad, former GBBO winner and food writer, David, made a special trip back home to uncover the baking delights of the North York Moors.
In a series of four films he recalls fond memories from his childhood whilst discovering new places. His explorations around the National Park involve lots of car-free ways to travel, with more emphasis on appreciating the journey. Along the way he picks up inspiration for a special birthday bake, in honour of the National Park's 70th anniversary.

Journey across the Capital of Cake car free !
Reflecting on his adventures, David loved touring across the North York Moors showing how many ways we can ditch a car and use alternative modes of transport. Not only from a feel-good, environmental perspective. It adds an extra element of appreciating the journey and seeing new landscapes, in an entirely different way.
Throughout his Capital of Cake journey, we see the benefits of earning your cake calories by walking to your destination. We covered the Cleveland Way and Esk Valley walk. Take a look at our walking pages to plan your cake trail. Cycling is another fantastic way to discover new trails and cover greater distances- especially if you opt for an electric bike!
Public transport is aplenty in the National Park so do think about ways you can take the bus and train whilst getting around. If you're feeling particularly adventurous and have the sea legs, see our coast by getting out on the water.
