Land of Iron

Discovering our past

Explore our interactive exhibition space which provides a fascinating insight into the history and habitats of the North York Moors and celebrates our ironstone heritage.

Walk through a re-created mine entrance to watch a dramatic animation of ironstone miners with scurrying mine rats, underground explosions and red-hot blast furnaces.  Explore the Land of Iron through amazing archive photographs and interactive 3D holograms of iconic structures such as Rosedale's Bank Top kilns.

In the habitat room, investigate a rock pool, discover what lives in a dry stone wall and operate a live-action feed from the Centre’s bird-feeder cam.

Upstairs, the ‘Mighty Movers’ mining zone has a ball run and digital displays that investigate the mechanics of moving ironstone around the moors. Young explorers can lift ironstone carts up from deep mines, send wagons careering around the moorland railway and negotiate the tricky descent of Ingleby Incline without crashing.
