New electric bike chargers

Electric bike (e-bike) charging stations have been installed at Sutton Bank and Danby Lodge National Park Centres.

We're excited to announce the installation of two e-bike charging stations within the National Park. These stations are free to use and feature plugs for Bosch and Shimano manufactured systems, as well as two generic three-pin plugs for other systems. Each station has the capacity to charge up to 4 e-bikes simultaneously. Additionally, each station is equipped with bike repair stands for basic bike check-ups.

With the growing popularity of electric bikes, the necessity for convenient charging solutions beyond the home is becoming increasingly important.

Benefits of e-bikes

Research by the World Bicycle Industry Association indicates that e-bikes now account for 10% of global bicycle sales. There are numerous benefits associated with using an e-bike:

  • Enhanced physical activity – The NHS recommends adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.  (Cycling UK, 2023). Electric assistance often allows for longer journeys, resulting in a comparable amount of physical activity to that of a conventional bike.
  • Accessibility and inclusivity – E-bikes make cycling more accessible to a wider demographic, including individuals who might find conventional cycling challenging due to age, physical limitations, or fitness. This means more people can enjoy the benefits of cycling and explore the outdoors.
  • Wellbeing – Cycling and outdoor activities are well-known for improving mental health (Cycling UK, 2023). The assistance provided by an e-bike can enable people who might otherwise feel too fatigued or tired to get outside and into nature.
  • Reducing car use - with the increase in popularity of e-bikes they are now a popular option as an alternative option instead of travelling by car and promoting active travel.
