Family fun

The perfect place to burn some energy

With expansive grounds and plenty of activities inside, there’s options for all ages, whatever the weather.

Danby Den

Wild and free, Danby Den’s the place to be! Our *accessible playground inspires younger generations to enjoy the outdoors being surrounded by beautifully carved animals whilst having lots of fun.

Pretend to be a ranger in our electric van, race friends on the zip wires, navigate the rope bridges and climb up to the nest tower.

* Please be sure to make your own checks and enquiries directly before travelling to ensure your individual accessibility requirements can be met. Our Danby Den accessibility guide can assist with making an informed decision or do get in contact with us (T: 01439 772737) if you have any queries or concerns.

More to explore outdoors

  • Visit our woodland Mud Kitchen for messy mud-pie making, complete with ovens, cupboards, pots and pans. Perfect for under 5s.
  • Search for the secretive woodlings and their homes in Crow Wood.
  • Our carved sculptures make for fab photos. Can you find the wish dragon, storytelling chair, butterfly and more?
  • Connect with nature in our reflective area and 'take a moment' in one of the sit spots around the grounds.
  • We have regularly-changing family trails to get minds ticking and legs moving! Plus, fun educational activities for children to do in the holidays.
  • There's plenty of benches so bring a picnic to share with the family.
  • Check out our jam-packed programme of events and activities that happen all year round.
  • For a slightly older crowd, see explore outdoors for other activities around the grounds.

There's lots to do indoors too!

Kids climbing the walls on rainy days? No problem, they can literally do that here, in our climbing cave. Little ones love the slide and have a go at building your own drystone wall.

There's plenty of interactive ways to learn about our fascinating history, heritage and diversity. In our habitat room, investigate a rock pool, discover what lives in a drystone wall and operate a live camera from the Centre's bird feeder.

As part of the Land of Iron exhibition, watch a dramatic ironstone extraction in an immersive video room. Head upstairs to the Mighty Movers Mining zone. Build an arch, Warren Moor Mine chimney and your own railway route to transport ironstone. Complete the Salmon run challenge, a moorland crossword and the ball run.

During every children's school holiday and half term we have a free indoor activity. It's usually a treasure hunt of some kind and you'll no doubt discover something inside that you didn't know existed.
